The Sociology of Chinese Capitalism in Southeast Asia

Abstract

This chapter presents four case studies of Thai-Yunnanese entrepreneurs in Chiang Mai, Thailand who employ multiple strategies to mitigate the challenges and seize the opportunities present with the influx of Chinese transnational entrepreneurs. The chapter discusses the impact of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and response in the form of production fetishism elucidating resistance, collaboration, mutual exploitation, and romanticization strategies adopted by Thai-Yunnanese small and medium enterprise (SME) entrepreneurs. The case studies provide a diversity of perspectives and responses to the changing and competitive business landscape and concludes with recommendations for policy consideration.
