Abstract

Chapter 10, “Traditional Festivals,” was written by Wang Yan and translated by Xiong Xiyuan. This chapter begins with a discussion of the characteristics of traditional Chinese festivals (agriculture-oriented and secular), then introduces four major festivals—the Spring Festival, the Clear and Bright Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival—and three minor festivals—the Lantern Festival, the Magpie Festival, and the Double Ninth Festival. Finally, some significant festivals observed by China’s different ethnic groups are described briefly.
