This book contributes to the store of knowledge gleaned through studies in contrastive rhetoric (hereafter abbreviated as CR), a research focus whose appearance on the applied linguistic scence is traced back to 1966 with the publication.

    In the literature, “big culture” and “large culture” are used interchangeably. For example, Atkinson (2004) uses the former and Holliday (1999) the latter. For the sake of consistency, we use the term “large culture”.
