Abstract

Spasticity is a motor disorder characterized by muscle hyperactivity or hypertony. Spasticity is mainly caused by cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. Hand function of patients with spastic thumb is fairly limited. House et al. classified the thumb-in-palm deformities into four types according to clinical features. The purpose of surgery for patients with spastic thumb is to give patients the ability to hold things or to deal with the personal hygiene necessary for their daily lives. Surgical options based on the classification include procedures to weaken the forces that cause deformation, to strengthen the weak muscles, and to keep the stability of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint.
