Abstract

The chapter presents a review of the diversity of floodplain forest communities and discusses their hydrologic, geomorphologic and regional features. The regional specificity of the species composition is clearest shown in briefly inundated forests. However, in all regions most of the floodplain forests belong to the herb section due to the absence of a moss layer there. The chapter also discusses the forest vegetation dynamics caused by the annual inundation, alluvium accumulation and river bank erosion together with the different resistances of trees, shrubs and herbaceous species to flooding.
