Abstract
The number of histocompatibility loci (H loci) at which two inbred mouse strains differ was estimated at 13–30, representing only a small proportion of the total number of more than 430 histocompatibility sites in the mouse (for references see Bailey, 1967). The alleles at the H loci in wild mouse populations can be subject to selective forces either directly or as a result of their linkage with other selectively non neutral loci, probably in supergene complexes. The concept of H-2-T region as a functional unit proposed by Snell (1968) is one of the possible examples of this situation.
