Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Study in Indian Zebu Cattle

  • Chapter

Summary

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was studied in 1160 bullocks and 126 cows of 6 different Indian breeds. The cattle showed both normal and deficient animals. The deficiency varied from 29.5% in Malvi to 50.0% in Kankrej. In other breeds the deficiency showed was Dangi 39.55%; Gir 31.0%; Khillari 35.72%; and Rathi 31.75%. The inheritance study from 123 matings constituting 10 sire families showed the possibilities of incomplete penetrance with variable expression in females. The probable role of G-6-PD deficiency in the protection against tick infestation and the possible role of other alternate enzymes in the glucose metabolism is suggested.
