Summary
In an effort to produce reagents for red blood cell antigens in cattle, three reagents anti-I2, anti-G2, and anti-R2 were produced which showed interesting patterns of reaction. These reagents, when diluted, gave much weaker reactions with red blood cells, possessing the I1, G1 and R1 antigens.
After absorption with any of the weakly reacting red cells, the reagents still had antibodies against the I2, G2, R2 antigens. We called these reagents anti-I0, -G0, -R0.
Using the reagent anti-I0, 5600 cattle were tested. They represent four breeds: Black and White, Polish Red, Danish Red and Simental cattle.
It was observed that the reagent anti-I0 gave reactions in all cases (872) where the antigen I2 occurred without I1.
There were 490 individuals with I1 antigen, but only 26 of them gave reaction withanti-I0. When the genotypes were established for this group of 26 individuals it appeared that each of them had in one phenogroup the blood factor I1 and in the other the I0 antigen.
The results demonstrate that reagent anti-I0 identifies the product of the gene which we propose to call B10, since antigen I2 is produced by both genes.
