Abstract
The change to the maintenance programme should not be a sudden process, but should be gradually introduced as the target weight is reached. Unless this stage is successfully accomplished then the dieting process will have been a waste of time and the typical ‘yo-yo weight syndrome’ will occur. The important consideration is to establish not only a more sensible eating pattern utilizing current nutritional concepts, but to achieve a new set point of weight by the long-term maintenance of the target weight by calorie restriction with an adequate intake of the essential components of the diet.
