Abstract
In order to practice medicine properly, a physician must have a working knowledge of alcoholism. Five to nine million Americans are alcoholics [1] and alcoholism costs the American economy about $15 billion per year in job absenteeism, inefficiency, and medical treatment [2]. Alcoholism causes a huge number of medical and social complications, many of which can be fatal or can have a profound disruptive effect on the lives of alcoholics and their families.
