Abstract
In a new approach to powder injection moulding, BASF has developed a new, polyacetal-based binder system. The rheological properties of the binder enable part dimensions and shapes that were previously impossible to mould. Debinding is achieved by a new catalytic process: The polyacetal binder is depolymerised in the presence of an acidic gas and volatilises as formaldehyde. Debinding proceeds from the surface inward with a speed of up to 2 mm/h, which is more than ten times faster than the conventional debinding technology allows. The low debinding temperature excludes warping, sagging or slumping.
