Abstract
Silicon powder is readily oxidised during milling in aqueous media at pH > 5 to yield colloidal silicon dioxide which during drying deposits as a thin film on silicon particle surfaces. Interaction between the films causes strong agglomeration in compacted powders, leading to inhomogeneity in the silicon particle packing which is retained during the subsequent argon sintering and nitriding stages of silicon processing to reaction bonded silicon nitride.
