Different susceptibilities to 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide of T cell sub-sets involved in delayed-type hypersensitivity of mice to sheep red blood cells

Abstract

It has been amply shown that cyclophosphamide (Cy), in addition to its immunosuppressive properties, enhances the cellular immune response to heterologous red blood cells, and both elimination by Cy of B cells and suppressor T cells (Ts cells) have been postulated as the underlying mechanism1–3. 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide (4-HPCy) is a derivative of Cy which in contrast to Cy acts on lymphocytes in vitro since the compound in aqueous solution is converted to 4-hydroxycyclophosphamide, the naturally occurring metabolite of Cy4.
