Abstract
A basic feature of the inflammatory process is the oriented migration to and accumulation at the site of tissue injury of the different types of leukocytes. Transitions from random to directional locomotion of leukocytes comprise cellular direction finding (cellular recognition) with processing of chemical information (metastable, dissipative conformer phases), and positional information (dissipative physical structures of chemical information in form of concentration non-equilibria as gradients and boundaries) residing in the solution of the chemoattractant. Concerning basic biological terms governing cell migration, classical anaphylatoxin-associated serum-derived chemotac-tic solutes highly purified and crystallized according to Wissler 1971. Experientia 27:1447. (Eur. J. Immunol, 2, 73), are biologically specific and exclusively induce this transition in neutrophil granuloytes: neither cellular locomotion itself, nor aggregation and adhesion of cells is influenced. Stimulation by this chemoattractant obeys Weber-Fechner’s law and expresses memory effects, i.e., repeated stimulation by same concentrations of the chemoattractant give little or no biological response (tachyphylaxis) in terms of direction finding (Keller, Wissler, Hess and Cottier, (1978). Eur. J. Immunol. 8, 1).
