Abstract
A brief review is presented on recent work dealing with the singlet excited states and triplet states of tyrosine, tryptophan and related systems in solution. The nature of the excited state precursors leading to the electron ejection from these aromatic amino acids is discussed. Experimental evidence in support of monophotonic versus biphotonic processes is presented. A correlation is presented between the quenching rate constants of the singlet excited state or the triplet state of an aromatic amino acid and the reactivity of the quencher towards the hydrated electron.
