Abstract
Inspiratory muscle fatigue occurs when there is an imbalance between the demands for energy of these muscles and the supply of energy available to them. Both an increase in demand and a decrease in supply can lead to inspiratory muscle fatigue. In this brief review, I will give examples of fatigue caused by both conditions, review the means by which fatigue may be diagnosed and discuss possible preventative and therapeutic measures which can be taken.
