Abstract
The level of urbanization in Sri Lanka is very uneven with the large metropolis of Colombo coexisting with a predominantly rural population. Urban growth has continued and the period of 1953–71 was particularly conspicuous, while in the 1970s the process of urbanization slowed down, undoubtedly under the impact of various rural development schemes. The spatial pattern of economic opportunities will affect population redistribution in the future.
