Abstract

Under certain conditions a relativistic particle stream is stable against disruption by self-generated turbulence. Such streams could persist and propagate at relativistic velocity in regions of strongly magnetized plasma near the cores of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The anomolously high brightness temperatures and superluminal motions observed in many AGN can be understood in terms of synchrotron radiating streams of electrons and/or positrons, without requiring unrealistic magnetic field configurations or extreme degrees of alignment relative to the observer.
