Abstract

U.V.-Vis. reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopies are powerful tools for surface characterization of dispersed solids. Surface states, related to intrinsic sites in low coordination, are evidenced on alkaline earth oxides powders and on other systems. The excitonic nature of the surface transitions at energies lower than the band edge of bulk materials has been demonstrated. Such excitons travel on the surface and radiative decay may occur. The emitting sites are low coordination ions on the surface. Spectral features of point defects on oxides and on alkali halides are quoted.
