Abstract

The October 1986 issue of Robotics World contained an article on automation of die casting using an industrial robot. What is described is precisely what the first industrial robot did in a General Motors plant in Ternstedt, NJ. That installation of Unimate 001 was made in 1961, and today serial #001 stands in honorary splendor at the Smithsonian! Robotized die casting is surely not timely application material for a monthly journal; although to be kind, one might excuse the editor by noting that in 25 years a new generation of manufacturing engineers has come on the scene and they may be innocent of the robotics heritage.
