Samenvatting

Door onze dagelijkse ‘successen’ realiseren wij dokters ons te weinig dat onze behandelwinst getalsmatig maar zeer marginaal is. Terwijl we in toenemende mate overspoeld worden door het aanbod van patiënten met kanker lijken wij steeds meer in een soort ‘behandelstand’ te staan, zonder onszelf eerst de juiste vragen te stellen. De maatschappij heeft groeiende behoefte aan een arts die holistisch denkt, kijkt naar het geheel aan patiëntfactoren, niet alleen naar een specifiek probleem. Ook wanneer het einde onontkoombaar is geworden, dienen we met onze patiënt op tijd de juiste en passende doelen te bespreken, waarbij ‘niet behandelen’ altijd een van de opties hoort te zijn. Ziekte heeft met falen of slagen niets te maken en hoeft dus niet altijd tot de laatste dag bevochten te worden.
