Samenvatting
Topsporters gebruiken, vaker dan de ‘gewone burger’, voedingssupplementen om beter te presteren, sneller te herstellen na een training en om hun gezondheid op peil te houden. Ook recreatieve sporters gebruiken voedingssupplementen. (Sport)voedingssupplementen kunnen verontreinigd zijn met als doping aangemerkte stoffen. Een positieve dopingtest als gevolg van het gebruik van een vervuild voedingssupplement kan bij herhaling voor een topsporter leiden tot uitsluiting van deelname aan wedstrijden voor een periode van vier jaar tot levenslang. Uit verschillende onderzoeken (vanaf 2000 tot in 2017) blijkt dat dit probleem al een tijd bestaat en nog steeds actueel is. Overigens nemen ook bezoekers van fitnesscentra en sportscholen soms voedingssupplementen, waaraan bewust als doping aangemerkte stoffen, zoals anabole (pro)hormonen, worden toegevoegd. Het gebruik hiervan kan tot forse gezondheidsschade leiden. Topsporters en recreatieve sporters doen in toenemende mate een beroep op (sport)diëtisten. Daarom dienen diëtisten op de hoogte te zijn van de risico’s die verbonden zijn aan het gebruik van voedingssupplementen door beide groepen sporters en van manieren waarop deze risico’s zoveel mogelijk kunnen worden vermeden. Om in Nederland een zo veilig mogelijk gebruik van voedingssupplementen voor (top)sporters mogelijk te maken, is in 2003 het Nederlands Zekerheidssysteem Voedingssupplementen Topsport (NZVT) opgezet.
