Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk komt aan de orde op welke wijze het individu zelfregulatie bereikt, hoe ervaringen hierbij een rol spelen, hoe deze ervaringen neurobiologisch worden opgeslagen, en welke plaats het vermogen tot mentaliseren hierin inneemt. Emoties en hun regulatie blijken een cruciale rol te spelen bij het tot expressie brengen van de genetische opmaak door omgevingsinvloeden, de zogenoemde gen-omgevingsinteractie. Op grond van een model wordt verklaarbaar hoe omgevingsinvloeden via het tot expressie brengen van genen blijvende veranderingen teweeg kunnen brengen in het vermogen van het individu zichzelf te reguleren. Het beeld van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen is dus niet compleet zonder aandacht voor het ontstaan van de regulatie van emoties in het vroege leven. Deze moderne inzichten vanuit de neurowetenschappen zijn onzes inziens zeer bruikbaar bij het verkrijgen van een beter begrip van de pathogenese van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen en leiden in de toekomst wellicht tot andere indelingscategorieën en behandelstrategieën.
