Abstract
The central nervous mechanisms regulating conscious behaviour, and particularly the waking and the sleeping states, have already been summarized in this Symposium by Rossi. The various, reticular and non-reticular, systems with activating and de-activating (or synchronizing) properties, and those responsible for triggering the deep or activated stage of sleep should not be recalled again in detail. The aim of our presentation is rather to discuss the reflex or, more generally speaking, the afferent modulation of these centres, and to draw a parallel with the effects of afferent and central excitation on a peculiar type of behaviour, which although not conscious in itself, is a frequent companion of conscious states. We are referring to the emotional behaviour of diencephalic origin.
