Enhancement of Radar Reflectivity Associated with the Lunar Crater Tycho

Abstract

The method of range-frequencypower density analysis has been applied to a study of the detailed radar reflectivity of the lunar surface. In the course of this study, an unusually high reflectivity has been found to be associated with the crater Tycho. The most likely explanation for this behavior appears to lie in a crater surface which is substantially rougher and perhaps somewhat denser than the typical lunar surface. Such an atypical surface might be expected for a crater as young as Tycho.

Résumé

La méthode d’analyse de la densité de puissance a été appliquée â. l’étude détaillée de la réflectivité au radar de la surface lunaire. Au cours de cette étude, une réflectivité anormalement élevée à été trouvée etre associée au cratère Tycho. L’explication la plus probable de ce comportement semble résider dans la surface du cratére, qui est sensiblement plus rugueuse et peut-ttre un peu plus dense que la surfacelunaire type. On peut supposer qu’une telle surface non typique existe pour un cratbre aussi jeune que Tycho.

Метод концентрации ра-диочастотной мощности применен для детального изучения отражательной способности лунной поверхности при радарных измерениях.При этом было об наруже но, что необычно высокая отражательная способность связана с кратером Тихо.Наибо-лее вероятное объяснение этого явления такого, что поверхность кратера значительно более неровна и,возможно,несколько более плотна.По-видимому,у молодого кратера Тихо именно такая не-типичная поверхность.
