Abstract
The problem of ionizing radiations in space and their effects on the astronaut’s body are considered.
The first section of the work deals with the origin and characteristics of extra-terrestrial radiations (cosmic rays, solar ionizing radiations, and Van Allen belt radiations), while the second part deals with biological doses corresponding to the fluxes of space radiations, biological protection for astronauts, and the characteristics of radiobiological injuries caused by protons and X-photons which penetrate into the spacecraft in flight.
The relations between radiation inside and outside the vehicle, and dose rates of different types of radiation, are discussed, and some methods are suggested for reducing the doses of radiation absorbed by the astronauts and preventing possible radiation injuries.
A proposal is made to employ a “scout-probe” vehicle equipped with radiation detectors which would precede a manned spacecraft on its flight and notify the astronauts and terrestrial bases of any possible dosimetric variations from values calculated prior to launching in sufficient time to permit the astronauts to take any protective measures necessary.
Aбстрактный
