Abstract
A comparison is made between the appearance of clouds as seen from the surface of the earth and as seenfrom a space vehicle. Equal areas of cloud or of the earth surface are computed for various altitudes of meteorological satellites. For the purpose of measuring and comparing phenomena in perspective a “sky-index” is defined and applied to photographs taken with “all-sky” and “all-earth” cameras“. Curves of the sky-index are computed with relation to the altitude of the satellite and to the altitude of the clouds.
Conspicuous differences existing between clouds seen from the surface of the earth and from space vehicles are stressed. The main results are tabulated and presented by diagrams, which can also be used for the study of clouds in the atmospheres of other planets.
In conclusion, the author discusses the problem of the distance for optimum advantage of meteorological satellites and the Aeros-Project.
