Abstract
The Isparta Çay formation is caracterized by a typical sedimentary succession and an original structural position. It belongs to the “Nappe médiane d’Antalya”. An uninterrupted section of this formation (about 1400 m. thick), is well exposed in the valley of the Isparta river, and along the Antalya road 15 km. South of Isparta.
The sequence is mainly composed of pelagic sediments: micritic Halobias limestones (with Halobias, Radiolarias, Ammonites and Aulacoceras) regularly stratified in beds of 10 to 20 cm. thick, with cherts and clayey joints, and thin bedded redish radiolarites with local manganesiferous impregnation. These rocks are irregulary intercalated with bottom transported coarse sediments including: breccias, conglomerates, calcarenites and sandstones with plants débris. These deposits, containing neritic carbonates fragments coming from a marginal environment, are interpreted as due to brief turbiditic events.
In this sequence has been found the following succession of Halobias species, from bottom to top: Halobia styriaca Mojs., H. superba Mojs.?, H. charlyana Mojs., H. austriaca Mojs., H. halorica Mojs., H. lineata (Münster), H. paralineata Kittl. The 2 later species were found with Juvavites sp.
The major interest of this section lies in the presence of many superimposed horizons of Halobias ranging in age from Carnian to Norian.
