Abstract
The central theme of much research on shift work is that a phase shift of the activity pattern forces the individual to adapt his whole physiological and psychological system to this change. The lack of success of this short run change/adaptation and the long run cost of repeated adaptation may cause many of the symptoms of which shift workers complain.
