Abstract
Up to now the shearing resistance of silt was scarcely investigated in comparison with that of clay. Because of its importance with regard to the large areas of distribution of silt a research work is being carried out in the Institute for Verkehrswasserbau, Grundbau and Bodenmechanik at the Technische Hochschule Aachen, the first part of which about disturbed, saturated silts is now complete. The most expedient testing equipment and testing conditions, which allow a clear determination of the shearing resistance of silt, were investigated. It was found out, that the direct shear apparatus is unsuitable for investigating silt. With the triaxial apparatus many disadvantages were avoided which appear in the direct shear test (progressive failure, measurement of the pore-water pressure etc.). The progress of the stress and especially of the pore-water pressure during shearing can be accurately followed with the triaxial apparatus.
