Abstract
The most common knee and shank injuries assume different grades of severity with surgery frequently indicated for adequate treatment. Traumatic injuries like fractures or dislocations or combined meniscus and ligament injuries demand a correct diagnosis and adequate therapeutic decisions in order to allow return to sports at a level similar to the pre-injury level. Overuse injuries demand sports knowledge, adequate conservative treatment and a lot of patience from the athlete and his physician. In some cases, surgery is the final key to successful treatment.
