Zusammenfassung
Hauptgründe für die große Bedeutung der Mikroorganismen in vielen Stoffkreisläufen liegen in der Intensität ihrer Stoffwechselvorgänge und der Vielfalt ihrer Stoffwechselwege. Während die höheren Organismen, wie in Kap. 2 angesprochen, im Verlauf der Evolution eine große morphologisch-anatomische Differenzierung erreichten, besitzen die Mikroorganismen, betrachtet als Gesamtheit, eine ausgeprägte biochemische Differenzierung.
