Die Hauptplatine ist der Kern der Hardware. In einem permanenten Speicher darauf ist ein minimales Programm abgelegt, welches das Betriebssystem startet. Man nennt es „BIOS“ (Basic Input/Output System) oder auch neuer „UEFI“ für Unified Extensible Firmware Interface.
