Zusammenfassung
Seit der Entdeckung vor etwa 80 Jahren, dass menschliche Spermien extrem tiefe Temperaturen im gefrorenen Zustand zu überleben vermögen, durch Jahnel (Jahnel 1938), hat die Kryokonservierung besonders in den letzten Jahren enorme Fortschritte gemacht. Heute ist es möglich, männliche und weibliche Keimzellen und -gewebe erfolgreich einzufrieren und über Jahrzehnte sicher zu lagern. Die Kryokonservierung ist die entscheidende Technik, die eine örtlich wie zeitlich beliebige Verwendung von Keimzellen und -gewebe ermöglicht. Kryokonservierung ist deshalb heute fester Bestandteil reproduktionsmedizinischer Behandlungen.
