Zusammenfassung

Obwohl die Depression bei älteren Erwachsenen ein weit verbreitetes Leiden ist, stellt sie keinen normalen Teil des Alterungsprozesses dar, sondern muss konsequent diagnostiziert und therapiert werden. Bemerkenswerterweise werden Depressionen bei älteren Patienten oft nicht erkannt, und wenn erkannt dann nicht behandelt. Depression ist im Alter häufig multifaktoriell und beeinflusst negativ Funktionen, Kognition und Lebensqualität. Die Verbesserung der Diagnose und die adäquate, auch nicht-medikamentöse Therapie sollte deshalb gezielt verfolgt werden. In diesem Kapitel werden diagnostische und therapeutische Optionen vorgestellt, die auch im fortgeschrittenen Alter die adäquate Behandlung der Depression erlauben.
