Laparo-endoscopic Hernia Surgery

Abstract

Laparo-endoscopic inguinal hernia repair is considered to be a costly operation which therefore may be limited for routine use in low-resource countries. In so far, due to the countless number of patients worldwide, reliable analysis of the real costs of these procedures is of paramount importance. Costs should be divided into institutional (direct) costs, reimbursements (charges), and societal (indirect) costs. In inguinal hernia surgery, socioeconomic costs are most relevant as both direct and indirect costs are evaluated during and after surgical treatment. Literature which reports on socioeconomic aspects of inguinal hernia surgery pleads for endoscopic repair as this results in earlier return to usual activities than in open repair. In this chapter, several practical tips for management of costs in endoscopic inguinal hernia repair are discussed as well as available evidence in literature.
