Zusammenfassung

Die Erde entstand vor 4,5 Mrd. Jahren, älteste Spuren organismischen Lebens sind rund 3,8–2,6 Mrd. Jahre alt. Die plattentektonischen und klimatischen Einflüsse über verschiedene Erdzeitalter hinweg werden in einem pflanzenevolutionären Zusammenhang vorgestellt (Abschn. 8.1). Außerdem wird die Frage, ob wir im Zeitalter des 6. Massensterbens leben, erörtert (Kasten 8.1).
