Zusammenfassung
Seit die Plattentektonik „funktioniert“, gab es zu jedem Zeitpunkt irgendwo auf der Erde konvergente Plattenränder und Transform-Plattengrenzen, in deren Bereich Störungstektonik, Faltung, Magmatismus und Metamorphose stattfanden. Abb. 10.1 und 10.2 illustrieren, dass dies auch für die moderne Erde gilt. Sind diese Prozesse mit kompressiver oder transpressiver Deformation in der Lithosphäre verbunden, spricht man von Orogenese (griechisch: Gebirgsbildung). Ein Orogen, das Produkt der Orogenese, ist eine meist lang gestreckte Zone in der Lithosphäre, die durch eine kogenetische gebirgsbildende Entwicklung gekennzeichnet ist. Meist spät im Verlauf einer Orogenese entsteht ein Gebirge im topografischen Sinne. Beispielsweise ist die Kollisionszone zwischen den Lithosphärenplatten India und Eurasia ein aktives Orogen, der Himalaya ist die topografische Entsprechung an der Oberfläche.
