Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the laboratory tests most importantly carried out on neonatal ICUs – often as POCT – along with their associated clinical problems. The analytical spectrum is not different from that in adults. A number of specific analytical problems (extremely small sample volumes, high hematocrit, partially higher concentrations of interfering substances etc.) are presented, as well as non-invasive transdermal procedures for blood gas analysis and determination of bilirubin in newborns.
