Zusammenfassung
Protozoen (griechisch = das erste Tier, veraltete Bezeichnung) sind als tierisch angesehene, eukaryontische, einzellige Organismen. Sie besitzen eine Zellmembran und im Gegensatz zu Bakterien einen Zellkern. Sie sind als Erreger weit verbreitet und können schwerwiegende Krankheitsverläufe hervorrufen. Sie haben insbesondere als opportunistische Erkrankungen (so bei HIV/AIDS) an Bedeutung gewonnen. Infektionen mit Protozoen sind häufig schwierig zu behandeln; eine Prophylaxe durch Immunisierung existiert bisher nicht. Aufgrund ihrer Größe sind Protozoen in vielen Fällen im Gewebe sowie diversen Körpersekreten (Stuhl, andere Körperflüssigkeiten) zu erkennen. Von den für den Menschen wichtigen Erkrankungen, die von Protozoen hervorgerufen werden, manifestieren sich nur Leishmaniasis, Trichomoniasis, sowie (gelegentlich) Amöbiasis und Rhinosporidiose an der Haut und den Schleimhäuten.
