Abstract
A close study of the loading conditions for failure in a wide range of fibres has been made possible by the development of equipment specifically designed to investigate their physical properties (Bunsell et al., 1971). The advent of the scanning electron microscope has allowed detailed micrographs to be obtained of these fine filaments which are typically of the order of 10 μm diameter (Hearle and Cross, 1970). By these methods a much greater understanding of the modes and mechanisms of fracture in fibres under different loading conditions is now possible.
