Abstract
Recently we have extended the studies to suspensions of particles in non-Newtonian(e.g. viscoelastic and pseudo-plastic) solutions of polymers (21 to 24). A number of important and significant differences from the Newtonian systems were observed which are interesting in their own right and which may prove to be of considerable practical importance. These differences include (i) changes in orientation of anisometric particles such as rods and discs, (ii) migration of particles to and from walls under conditions where, in Newtonian systems, no migration occurs, (iii) subtle differences in the modes of deformation and burst of liquid drops, (iv) microscopic irreversibility. Apart from evidence that most of these phenomena are attributable to normal stresses in the non-Newtonian liquids, virtually no theory has been developed to explain these interesting effects, although some speculation has been made (25) on the origin of item (i).
