L’exploitation de la biréfringence des solides pour la détermination des contraintes est utilisée depuis longtemps dans le domaine élastique: c’est la photoélasticité. Cette biréfringence se manifeste aussi dans d’autres comportements, et même dans certains liquides en mouvement, comme le signala Maxwell (1) dès 1873.
