Summary
The local effect of radiation on the ureter depends on the dose employed, or the manner in which applied and the radiation-technique, i. e. choice of field etc., employed. Exogenous factors, such as inflammatory changes or tumorous growths in the area of the ureter also play a part.
The combination of a functional examination (isotope nephrogram) and morphological presentation with the pyelogram frequently discloses early changes in the form of a disturbance in urine-flow, when high doses (somewhat over 4000 R) are employed. However, in most cases, these changes revert to normal.
Additional vascular damage, as shown by pelvic arteriography quite some time after cobalt-radium therapy, may play some part in later changes. The tolerance threshold of the ureter would appear to be under normal conditions between 6000 and 7000 R.
