Abstract
This paper outlines work in progress in a centre for intelligent knowledge-based systems for computer-aided decision. The centre was recently established in the Division of Building Research CSIRO, Australia. The research is an extension of previous Divisional contributions to the mathematical basis for automated optimal design and planning.
The work takes two paths: (1) development of expert systems to aid design, planning, and fault diagnosis involving building technology, and (2) development of intelligent optimization techniques as engines for CAD (computer-aided design or decision) systems.
This paper is primarily concerned with the Division’s work on optimization techniques; and the inclusion of knowledge and reasoning into these techniques to increase their efficiency and effectiveness. The aim is to provide an intelligent ‘engine’ for driving automated and computer-aided decision systems.
The centre is collaborating with the CAD industry, the computer industry, government and user industries both on expert systems development and on intelligent optimization systems for CAD.
