Abstract
This paper discusses the problems of producing process plans for large scale fabrication of welded structures. The conventional problem solving methodology is analysed and the suitability of an expert system solution is evaluated. Details are included of a collaborative project with a large engineering company to build such a system. As well as outlining the system development cycle the paper also deals with some of the practical difficulties encountered. With the benefit of hindsight some comments are offered on how to get started and insights are given into certain features of expert system software which can be used in the arc welding domain.
