A comparative electron microscopic study on developing nuclei of various animals

Abstract

In so far as the sperm nucleus carries genetic material, it would be of interest to know what changes in submicroscopic organization of chromosomes are associated with metamorphosis of the spermatid. Recent advances in electron microscopy have revealed a surprising variety of changing structural arrangements within the spermatid nuclei of various animals at different stages of maturation (2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8,9, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15). The present report deals with a comparative electron microscopic study on such developing spermatid nuclei as the grasshopper Gelastorrhinus bicoler de Haan, the pond snail Cipangopaludina malleata and the crab Eriocheir japonicas.
