Abstract
Insect chemoreceptor cells send their distal processes into porous sensory hairs. The mechanism of stimulus transduction is deduced from the electrophysiological behaviour of the receptor cells. Only in some cases is the excitatory mechanism supposedly a mass effect (osmosis or ion-current). In general, we are dealing with an interaction between single stimulus particles and acceptor molecules. Many receptor cells are very specific and some olfactory cells are extremely sensitive as well.
