Abstract

The professional accountability frame describes standards for the performance of the media with the objective of counteracting pronounced influence by the political and the economic sector on the media (Bardoel & D’Haenens, 2004). As this part of the book focuses on the underlying conditions for the emergence of professional accountability in this sense, this chapter aims to introduce issues affecting the professional exercise of journalism in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The role of journalism in society and the way in which journalists themselves perceive and interpret their work can be seen in direct relationship to the emergence and exercise of media accountability.
