Media accountability instruments in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay: Nature, prerequisites, and importance

Media and Accountability in Latin America

Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive picture of the media accountability infrastructure in the countries under study by presenting self-regulatory, transparency, and participatory instruments. In many cases, MAI do not only refer to one of these three categories, but can be counted in two of them. This overlap of categories represents the definition of media accountability as described in Section 4.4, and is visualized in Figure 14.1. The triangulation of methods ensures an encompassing approach to the analysis of media accountability in the countries under study, which the following short overview makes clear: Neither can quantitative results from the content analysis tell the whole story; nor do qualitative interviews and the desk study.
